The internal wiring of the CCD can become disconnected in high-temperature or high-humidity environments. Canon issued a recall in October 2006 adding these to their recall list. The damaged CCD displays purple or blueish, distorted or possibly no image at all. The menu and pictures taken prior to the CCD disconnect will still display normally.[1][2]
The Digital IXUS 400 has a known issue where the camera incorrectly reports a problem with the memory card (Memory Card Error message). This problem can be temporarily overcome by removing both the main battery as well as the small internal battery. Canon has acknowledged this issue and will repair free of charge. Go to the Canon web site for your region (e.g. http://canon.ca/english/index-customersupport.asp for Canada) and click on the Powershot Digital Camera link on the left hand side. Look for Service Notice: PowerShot S400 CF Card Error.
